For Writers

As a writer, you are proud of your work, you want it to be at its best and are keen to have it out in the world. However, the next steps can seem confusing and overwhelming.

I offer a friendly, understanding ear to help you navigate the best path for you.

My focus all the while is on working in collaboration with you to produce a professional product. I aim to help you enhance your reader’s experience, without losing sight of your voice or your style. You remain in control and are always free to accept or reject the suggestions I make.

What you need will depend upon what you have written, what level of editing it has already been through and what you intend to do with it! If you’re intending to submit to publishers and agents you will no doubt need a different level of service than if you’re intending to self-publish.

Copy-editing

In copy-editing, I work carefully through the material, checking for spelling, grammar and punctuation errors, stylistic issues (such as awkward phrasing and inconsistent language), and obvious plot inconsistencies, with a focus on improving the clarity and readability of your writing. I may suggest minor rephrasing or light rewriting, but I will not interfere with your voice or style or do any extensive rewriting.

You can read a more detailed description of copy-editing here

Proofreading

This is a final quality control check before going to publication. When I proofread, I look at spelling, grammar and punctuation, typos, inconsistencies and formatting issues, but I don’t address style issues.

You can read more about proofreading here.

I offer a free 500-word sample copy-edit or proofread.
Please contact me if you’d like to book this.

Which do I need?

In an ideal, you will hire both – a copy-editor to work with you to polish your book to its best, and a proofreader to make final checks before publication. However, I understand that budgets don’t always stretch to the ideal scenario and that self-publishing doesn’t necessarily need to fit the traditional workflow step by step. I am always happy to discuss a bespoke service tailored to your needs, such as a light edit (more than a proofread, not quite as much as a full copy-edit!)

Choosing an editor to work with you is more than a matter of ability – it’s also important that you trust them with your work and feel comfortable discussing it with them. I am more than happy to chat with you, or meet with you if you live locally to me, to see if we are a good fit.

If you’d like further information, or even if you’re just not sure which service you need,
please don’t hesitate to contact me to talk it over – totally free and with no obligation.

Book Formatting/Typesetting

I can format your book for print or ebook. If you wish, I can liaise with printers or handle the uploading of your book to your chosen service. See here for more information.

Consultation/Project Management

For self-publishing authors I also offer a consultation or complete project management service, tailored entirely to your needs. If you wish, I can work alongside you to take your book all the way from first edit to publication. Please contact me to find out more.

Please note that you will usually need to book in advance so that I can schedule your work in. That way I can be sure to allocate the time your work deserves and meet the deadlines we agree on.

I usually work in MS Word with Track Changes switched on so that you can easily see the amendments and suggestions made and can choose to accept or reject each change made. If you’re unfamiliar with this function, there are many online guides and tutorials to help, such as this one, and many YouTube videos, such as this one. It’s a very useful function, and I can guide you through getting to grips with it if you need me to.
