As a writer, it can be difficult to know which editing and proofreading services you should be looking for and how to go about it. I offer a friendly, understanding ear to help you navigate the best path for you.
I am happy to consider any genre, although I have particular experience in:
- literary fiction
- RPG (roleplaying games) material
- romance (including erotica)
I offer the following services:
- book design and layout
- publishing consultation

What you need will depend upon what you have written, what level of editing it has already been through and what you intend to do with it! If you’re intending to submit to publishers and agents you will no doubt need something different level than if you’re intending to self-publish. Not sure? Contact me for a no-obligation chat.
My focus all the while is on working in collaboration with you to produce a professional product. I aim to help you enhance your reader’s experience, without losing sight of your voice or your style. You remain in control and are always free to accept or reject the suggestions I make.
When you have edited your own work and are satisfied that it is as complete as you can make it, copy-editing is the next step.
In copy-editing, I address:
- spelling, grammar and punctuation
- consistency, ambiguity and fact checking
- creative content, writing style and language use. Is your language clear, fluid and pleasurable to read? Does it convey a sense of atmosphere, emotion and tone? Do the words you’ve chosen convey your intended meaning?
The focus is on improving the clarity and readability of your writing. I will suggest changes and explain why, but I will not interfere with your voice or style or do any extensive rewriting.
You can read a more detailed description of my copy-editing service here.
I offer a free 500-word sample copy-edit so you can see what you’re getting before you commit. Please contact me if you’d like to book this.
This is a final quality control check before going to publication. When I proofread, I look at spelling, grammar and punctuation, typos, inconsistencies and formatting issues, but I don’t address style issues.

I offer a free 500-word sample proofread so you can see what you’re getting before you commit. Please contact me if you’d like to book this.
Which do I need?
In an ideal world, you will need both – a copy-editor to work with you to polish your book to its best, and a proofreader to make final checks before publication. However, I understand that budgets don’t always stretch to the ideal scenario and that self-publishing doesn’t necessarily need to fit the traditional publishing workflow step by step. I am always happy to discuss a bespoke service tailored to your needs, such as a light edit (more than a proofread, not quite as much as a full edit!)
Choosing an editor to work with you is more than a matter of ability – it’s also important that you trust them with your work and feel comfortable discussing it with them. I am more than happy to chat with you to see if we are a good fit.
If you’d like further information, or even if you’re just not sure which service you need,
please don’t hesitate to contact me to talk it over – totally free and with no obligation.
I can format your book for print or ebook. If you wish, I can liaise with printers or handle the uploading of your book to your chosen service, such as Amazon.
See here for more information.
For self-publishing authors, I also offer a consultation or complete project management service, tailored entirely to your needs. If you wish, I can work alongside you to take your book all the way from first edit to publication. Please contact me to find out more.
Please note that you will usually need to book in advance so that I can schedule your work in. That way I can be sure to allocate the time your work deserves and meet the deadlines we agree on.
I usually work in MS Word with Track Changes switched on so that you can easily see the amendments and suggestions made and can choose to accept or reject each change made. If you’re unfamiliar with this function, there are many online guides and tutorials to help, such as this one, and many YouTube videos, such as this one. It’s a very useful function, and I can guide you through getting to grips with it if you need me to.
